uStream mIRC Tutorial [OUTDATED]

Post by Foxtrot200 » Sat Aug 14, 2010 1:08 am

THIS TUTORIAL IS OUTDATED!
PLEASE USE MODERNHYRULIAN'S TUTORIAL FOR RIZON

This is where the IRC client tutorials will go. If you can, please post a tutorial here, preferably with detailed screenshots.

----------------
:mIRC Setup:
----------------

I've decided to revise this tutorial since, I've noticed, it's a bit hard to follow. Now it has pictures!!! :D

Download and Install mIRC from http://www.mirc.com
When it is installed, open it and click continue when the registration dialog appears. Unfortunately, mIRC is now a 30 day trial unless you buy a license, but I think it's worth it.
If you'd like to remove the registration dialog at startup, you must register mIRC.

Now that we have mIRC open, let's get started.
  1. Click the "hammer" in the mIRC toolbar:
    Image
    (Hammer highlighted in red)
  2. A dialog should now pop up that looks like this:
    Image

Fill it out so it looks something like this:

    Image
  3. Click on the servers list item from the list on the left of the mIRC options dialog:

    Image
  4. Click the "Add" button on the right of the mIRC options and another dialog should appear:

    Image

Fill it out just as I have in this picture:

    Image
**place your password in the "Password" field**
  5. Once done, click the "Add" button in the Add Server dialog box.
  6. Now, there should be a new server entry called "Random Server" under the "Ustream" group. If you do not see it, double click the "Ustream" folder. Click "Random Server", and click the "Select" button on the right of the dialog box:

    Image
  7. In the list box on the left side of the mIRC options dialog, there should be an option labeled "Options." Click it and set everything to your liking. I prefer these settings:

    Image
  8. Once you are done setting everything to your heart's content, click the "Perform" button at the bottom of the dialog. This will bring up a new dialog box:

    Image
  9. Click the "Add" button in the new dialog box, find Ustream, and click "OK":

    Image
  10. Click on the drop-down list and choose "Ustream" from the list.
  11. Fill the new dialog box as I have below, replacing "Foxtrot200" with your username:

    Image
  12. When you click "OK", you will be taken back to the mIRC options dialog. Click "OK" to save your settings and click the yellow lightning bolt in the mIRC toolbar to connect!

IRC clients are a great way to stay away from ustream's glitches and limited client.

With mIRC, you can see mode changes (bans, channel settings, etc.), kicks, joins, parts, quits, topic changes, and nick changes.

There is also a script engine built into mIRC and scripting for it is easy as long as you follow the help file.

you still haven't fixed where it's supposed to say "chat1.ustream.tv" x3 i dont know if that's an alternative or what, but i've had to help several people, and changing that usually fixed the problem

people can choose any IRC server to use

chat01
chat02
chat03 -or-
chat04

Tom one day recommended people to use the "chat01.ustream.tv" one time.

You don't really need to worry about chat#.ustream.tv if you're using c.ustream.tv since c.ustream.tv connects to a random server. If c.ustream.tv is down, all of the ustream clients will be down as well, so there's not much of a reason to use anything other than c.ustream.tv except for when traveling through servers during a netsplit.

I found a way to restart the evaluation timer for mIRC.
What I do every 30 days is...
Start>run>regedit

there, find HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>mIRC

delete the LastRun folder and you have a new 30 days to use mIRC without problems.
Works for me! :D

Since people are having trouble logging into the Justin.tv (JTV) chat via IRC clients, I'll explain how I was able to log in via mIRC. I know that Grifforzer was able to do it in a different manner than this, but whatever works is fine!

Official Guide: http://www.justin.tv/p/irc_guide

mIRC is capable of connecting to multiple servers (i.e. Ustream and JTV) at the same time. Just open up multiple mIRC windows. Alternatively, you can go to File -> New Window to make multiple server tabs within the same window. Credit to Eat_Box for the tip!

For the most part, follow Foxtrot's tutorial with the following changes:

Part 2: Put your JTV username in the fields

Part 4: Make sure you put in your JTV password
Image

Part 11: Either "thetombobblendershow" or "#thetombobblendershow" will work
Image

After everything is finished, click the lightning bolt. You should get something similar to this:
Image

If you're successful, then you'll immediately connect to the chat! :D If you're still stuck, don't worry! Leave a post describing your problem and we'll see what we can do. Thanks for watching The TomBobBlender Show on JustinTV!

One more thing: If you start to see double posts, just restart mIRC. It happens occasionally.

I'm getting a weird error when I try to join the room.

This is the server window message
irc.justin.tv REDIRECT thetombobblendershow 199.9.249.17

And this is the message I get PMed when I try to do so.
To join #thetombobblendershow, please configure your IRC client to connect to server IP 199.9.249.17 and port 6667.

I do that. Same message. And thiiiis is why I don't like JTV.

That is normal, Eat_Box just put 199.9.249.17 in the server line of the configuration instead of the irc.justin.tv.

Now enjoy the horrible IRC chat according to many member's opinion. XD

well darn,

I just remember adding irc.justin.tv to the IRC server line for the new server to connect with using MIRC with my justin tv password. Going to the channel I wanted to connect and typing /server to get the IP address. Enter that IP address from that channel to replacing the irc.justin.tv line and re-connecting using the /join #channel command.
